What You'll Learn from A Behavior evaluation in Kansas City

You'll walk away with answers to the questions keeping you up at night. →

behavioral psychological evaluation
  • What's really going on? Clear understanding of the root causes behind the behavior. Is it anxiety presenting as defiance? Undiagnosed ADHD causing frustration? Depression masking as irritability? Trauma responses? We identify what's driving the behavior.
  • What are the underlying needs? Behavior is communication. We decode what your child is trying to communicate through their behavior—whether it's "I'm overwhelmed," "I don't feel safe," "I can't do what you're asking," or "I need help."
  • Is this within normal limits, or does it need intervention?
Honest assessment of severity. Some oppositional behavior is developmentally normal; we clarify when it crosses into concerning territory requiring professional support.
  • What about ADHD, autism, or learning disabilities?
Behavioral problems often coexist with or stem from other conditions. We identify any underlying ADHD, autism traits, or learning struggles that might be causing behavioral difficulties.
  • What trauma or stress factors are contributing? Sensitive exploration of whether past or current experiences (family
stress, bullying, loss, trauma) are impacting your child's behavior and emotional state.
  • How do I respond differently? Parent strategies that address the root cause, not just the surface behavior. You'll learn what's actually triggering your child and how
to respond in ways that help rather than escalate.

Why families trust

Dr. Tish Taylor

For their Child's behavioral & psychological Evaluation

With over 25 years of experience in child psychology, Dr. Tish understands that behavior is always communication, and that beneath defiance, aggression, or withdrawal is usually a child who's struggling and needs help, not punishment. Her behavioral assessments are comprehensive and compassionate, looking beyond surface behaviors to identify root causes; whether that's undiagnosed ADHD, anxiety masking as defiance, trauma responses, or developmental challenges. Her evaluations are trusted by school districts across the Kansas City area, including Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission, and Olathe, because they’re comprehensive, individualized, and actionable. She assesses for all contributing factors - ADHD, learning disabilities, autism traits, anxiety, depression, trauma - because behavioral problems rarely exist in isolation. Parent education is essential to her process; she explains what's happening in developmentally appropriate terms and teach strategies that address causes, not just symptoms.

Will this just tell me my child has ODD?

Not necessarily. While we do diagnose Oppositional Defiant Disorder when criteria are met, we look much deeper. Often, what looks like ODD is actually anxiety, undiagnosed ADHD, trauma responses, or a child who's frustrated because they can't do what's being asked. The diagnosis matters less than understanding what's truly happening and what will help.

My child only acts out at home. Do I still need an evaluation?

Yes—this pattern is actually common and meaningful. Children often "hold it together" at school and then fall apart at home where they feel safe. This can indicate anxiety, sensory overload, or emotional dysregulation. An evaluation helps you understand what's happening and how to support your child.

Isn't this just normal kid behavior?

Some defiance and emotional ups and downs are completely normal, especially during developmental transitions (toddlerhood, early teens). An evaluation helps clarify what's within normal limits versus concerning. Generally, if
behavior is significantly impacting family functioning, school performance, or your child's wellbeing, it's worth evaluating.

What if my child refuses to participate in testing?

Refusal itself provides valuable information. We're experienced in building rapport with resistant children and adolescents. Sometimes we gather information primarily from parent and teacher reports rather than direct testing, and that's still clinically meaningful.

What if the problem is more about anxiety or depression than behavior?

That's exactly what we assess for. Anxiety often presents as defiance ("I can't go to school" becomes "I won't go to school"). Depression in children often looks like irritability and behavioral problems rather than sadness. We identify underlying emotional struggles.
